thinking with machines without becoming their output
outsource the storage. never outsource the wanting.
there's a fear moving through every serious builder i know, usually confessed quietly after the second coffee: am i getting dumber? i think with the machine all day. drafts, analysis, code, decisions. what happens to the muscle i'm not using?
and there's an opposite intuition, felt by the same people on better days: i've never been this capable. i hold context i could never hold, i explore ten branches where i used to explore one, and something that knows my whole history is starting to sit under my decisions like a foundation.
both intuitions are correct. that's what makes this interesting. the question was never whether to think with machines. it's how to take the second thing without the first: how to think with machines without becoming their output.
the atrophy evidence, honestly graded
the fear has data behind it now, and it deserves an honest grading, because the pop version overstates it.
the strongest single datapoint isn't about knowledge work at all. a lancet study of endoscopists found that after months of routine ai-assisted colonoscopy, doctors' unaided detection rate fell from 28.4% to 22.4%. read that carefully: the ai didn't just help them; exposure to it made them measurably worse without it. it's observational, but it's the first direct clinical documentation of ai deskilling, and there's no reason to believe medicine is special.
on the thinking side, the famous mit "your brain on chatgpt" study, weaker eeg engagement and poor recall of your own essay when the model wrote it, is a small, non-peer-reviewed preprint, and the authors themselves beg people not to over-read it. i cite it as a signal, not a verdict. the sturdier finding is from a microsoft and carnegie mellon survey of 319 knowledge workers across 936 real tasks: the more people trusted the ai, the less critical thinking they did; the more they trusted their own expertise, the more they interrogated the output. confidence is the control knob. and a science advances study found ai assistance made individual writers more creative while making the population of outputs more similar. individual lift, collective convergence: everyone gets a little better and a little more identical.
then there's the oldest evidence in the world: use it or lose it runs in both directions. london taxi drivers who memorized the city grew measurably larger posterior hippocampi; trainees who failed the exam didn't. and habitual gps users show worse unaided spatial memory over time. the tissue follows the load. the load follows the offloading.
so the fear is legitimate. what atrophies is whatever you fully delegate: generation, recall, navigation, first-draft thinking. what the survey data says protects you is self-trust strong enough to keep interrogating.
now the other half
here's where i part ways with the doom reading, because the offloading itself is not the sin. humans have externalized cognition forever: writing, ledgers, maps, calculators. socrates worried that writing would rot memory. he was even partially right, and it was still the greatest cognitive trade in history, because what we bought with the freed capacity was worth more than what we stored.
the framework researchers use is the right one: offloading is using the world to reduce the load on the head, and it goes wrong only when your metacognition is miscalibrated, when you trust the tool more than its actual reliability, or trust your unaided self more than its actual ability. offloading isn't a vice. uncalibrated offloading is.
which brings me to the thing i actually want to defend: the second brain, done properly.
the second brain thesis
most people run their ai like a very smart stranger: fresh context, generic answers, no history. that's the configuration with the worst trade: generic output in, your voice diluted out, nothing compounding.
the version i'm building toward, and increasingly living in, is different in kind, not degree: a persistent external system that holds your context: every decision you've logged, every thesis you've written, your taste in examples, your risk appetite, your failure patterns, what you believed last year and how it aged, even the state you tend to be in when you decide badly. not a notes app. a calibrated model of your situation and, honestly, of you.
i want to be precise about the claim here, because the truth bar demands it: there is no rigorous study showing personal knowledge systems improve decision quality. the mechanism, though, is old and plausible: externalizing storage frees working memory for actual reasoning, and a store that's calibrated to you turns generic intelligence into situated intelligence. so this is conviction, labeled as conviction, from someone living inside the experiment.
and the conviction is strong: this becomes the backbone of decision-making. the difference between asking a model "should i do this deal?" and asking a system that holds your last three years of logged decisions, your stated principles, your actual track record of what you regret, is the difference between a horoscope and a flight computer. the machine's raw intelligence is a commodity now; everyone has it. intelligence calibrated to your history, your psychology, your stakes: nobody can rent that, because the data only exists if you built it.
that's the unlock people miss when they argue about whether ai makes you dumber. uncalibrated ai makes you interchangeable. calibrated ai makes you more yourself, with better instruments.
the design rules
so the design question is a sorting problem: what to hand over, what to never let go of. my current sorting:
offload ruthlessly: storage and recall (the log, not the lesson), retrieval and synthesis of what's known, the tenth-to-ninetieth drafts, arithmetic, formatting, everything mechanical between an intention and its execution.
never delegate: the wanting, i've written a whole essay on why that's the bottleneck; the values and the final call on anything irreversible; the first ugly draft of a genuinely new thought, because that's the rep that builds the tissue; and the verification stance itself, the habit of asking "is this actually true?", because the confidence data says that's the exact muscle that keeps you the author.
and keep doing manual reps on purpose. the taxi drivers built the hippocampus by driving the routes. once a week i write something with no model in the loop, decide something with the log closed, navigate without the map. not nostalgia. load-bearing exercise for the parts i refuse to lose.
the author test
there's a simple test for which side of the line you're on. read your own output from last month: the essay, the plan, the architecture. if you can defend every load-bearing choice in it, you used the machine. if you're discovering what it says, the machine used you.
the builders who win this decade won't be the ones who refused the second brain, they'll be sitting on a compounding asset the refusers can't copy. and they won't be the ones who dissolved into it either. they'll be the ones who kept the seam clean: machine holds the memory, human holds the wanting.
